Union County Historical Society
Fall 2007 Volunteer Awards

AWARDS PRESENTED AT ANNUAL MEETING TO TONY & JANICE SHIVELY AND TO THE NORMAN BUCK FAMILY

The Union County Historical Society held their Annual John B. Deans Dinner/Program on Thursday, November 15th at the Carriage Corner Restaurant in Mifflinburg.  Awards were presented to two families that have made significant contributions to our communities.

The Outstanding Achievement Award was presented to Tony and Janice Shively of Millmont, for researching, writing and producing The Millmont Times. The Millmont Times, debuting in May 2002, was first delivered door-to-door to 60 homes in the Millmont area.  No longer hand delivered, the Millmont Times has a circulation of 720 families and individuals who receive the publication by e-mail and regular mail.  As The Millmont Times circulation grew, so did its impact on the people in Union County and beyond.  Its articles are a “must read” for county history buffs and for their publication the Society is indebted.

The Historic Preservation Award was given to the Norman Buck Family for returning character and elegance to historic facilities in central Pennsylvania.  Over the years, the Bucks have renovated and restored the Mifflinburg Hotel, the Lewisburg Hotel and the Watson Inn.  These community landmarks, with important connections to our past, now offer fine dining, banquet services, catering and hotel accommodations. The boroughs of Watsontown, Lewisburg and Mifflinburg have benefited from the Buck family's preservation efforts in restoring charm, character and life to historic buildings in our community and for this the Historical Society is grateful.  Accepting the award for the family were Nancy Buck, wife of the late Norman Buck, and Jennifer Buck, their grand-daughter, who with Rick Buck, manages the Mifflinburg Hotel.

The Society, and our communities, greatly benefit from the efforts of these men and women; we thank them for their work
